Filipino Community

One faith, one family — gathered in prayer, service, and the living traditions of the Filipino people.

“Filipino Catholics: Gifts to the Church and the World” consultation

Mabuhay, and welcome. The Diocesan Commission for Filipino Catholics gathers the parishes, ministries, and families of Filipino heritage across San Diego and Imperial Counties in the worship and service of the one Church.

Who We Are

Preamble

We, the Filipino Catholics of the Diocese of San Diego, believing in the Fatherhood of God, the redeeming love of Jesus Christ, and the sanctifying grace of the Holy Spirit, gather as one people in the communion of the Church. Mindful of the faith handed down to us by our forebears and of the gifts of our culture, we commit ourselves to the mission entrusted to the whole Church: to know Christ, to live in Him, and to make Him known.

Under the patronage of the Santo Niño and of our Blessed Mother, we bring the devotions, hospitality, and family life of the Philippines into the pastoral life of this local Church, in unity with our Bishop and in service to all peoples of the Diocese.

Mission Statement

The Filipino Community of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego exists to nurture the faith of Filipino Catholics and their families, to preserve and share the religious traditions of our heritage, and to work in communion with the Bishop and the parishes of the Diocese for the spiritual growth, dignity, and welfare of all God’s people.

Objectives

  • To deepen the faith life of Filipino Catholics through the Sacraments, catechesis, Scripture study, and the devotional traditions of the Filipino people.
  • To support the parishes of the Diocese in welcoming and forming Filipino families, new immigrants, and young adults in the practice of the faith.
  • To hand on the language, music, and religious customs of the Philippines — among them Simbang Gabi, Flores de Mayo, Santacruzan, and devotion to the Santo Niño — to the next generation.
  • To promote vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate, and the consecrated life from within the Filipino community.
  • To serve the poor, the sick, the aged, and the newly arrived through works of charity coordinated with diocesan ministries and Catholic Charities.
  • To foster unity and mutual respect among all the cultural communities of the Diocese, giving witness to the universality of the Church.
  • To advise the Bishop, through the Office for Cultural Diversity, on the pastoral needs and gifts of Filipino Catholics in San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Liturgical Year 2026

Events

Four principal observances mark the year of the Filipino Community — Santa Cruzan in May, San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro Calungsod in the autumn, and the nine dawn Masses of Simbang Gabi before the Nativity of the Lord. Each is celebrated in a host parish of the Diocese, and all are welcome, whatever your background or language.

Host parishes, celebrants, and starting times are listed in the diocesan schedule below. Parish coordinators may write to the Commission to volunteer a choir, a procession, or a hospitality committee for any of these celebrations.
